While students wandered through Eickoff Hall these past few weeks, they probably didn’t realize that the school’s current food provider, Sodexho, was possibly not coming back next semester. However, after a lengthy exploration process, TCNJ decided on keeping the dining provider. Four other companies were considered, but Sodexho was deemed the winner. The school's Director of Auxiliary Services cited the company’s nutritional food offerings as well as their expanded educational, sustainable and social dining programs that are expected in the next dining contract as reasons for the decision.
This is Sodexho’s second consecutive contract with the school, but this one will bring significant changes to the dining program. For one, the company has dropped the “h” from their name. So instead of Sodex “ho,” it is now known as Sodex “o.” Perhaps the risqué Halloween costumes that are popular among female students got to the company. The name is not the only thing that is changing, either. New concepts, such as the current Trayless Tuesdays, will become more and more prevalent in the fall semester and beyond.
The college will offer longer hours, and perhaps, most important to the students, a brand new meal equivalency time. During this time, students can go to the student center food court or the library café, and order up to four dollars and ninety five cents worth of food, without being charged. It is currently only offered between eleven thirty AM and one thirty PM, but next semester, will be offered between four thirty and six thirty PM, and also be available at the TW food court.
The college and Sodexo hope the contract reaches a compromise that is best for the students of TCNJ. Every situation is unique, and that’s why Sodexho has a different contract for each college it serves, which includes
No matter if our student center begins to resemble a mall food court, or nothing changes at all, Sodexo is here to stay. Hopefully, the new program will be more tailored to the students’ needs, because without them, hardly any food would be bought at all.
